On an autumn hike at the top of Whistler Mountain, just before the first snows fell in October, I was fortunate to be rewarded with incredible views of Singing Pass and Overlord Glacier in the distance.
This piece aims to capture the vivid colours and majesty of Singing Pass. Rich undertones and sweeping arcs reflect its vibrant, raw, surreal beauty. Indeed, this land sings, serenading its visitors with wild allure.

My deep love for evergreen trees inspired this portrait of the "Mother of Evergreens", titled in reference to the fact that a single pinecone holds the potential to seed an entire forest. As 'seeds of life,' pinecones represent potent metaphors for the power of individuals to create change on a large scale.
Conifer Pine Trees are one of the most ancient plant genera on the planet, having existed nearly three times longer than all flowering plant species. The Pinecone is the evolutionary precursor to the flower, and its spines spiral in a perfect Fibonacci sequence, much like the 'Sacred Geometry' of a rose or a sunflower.
Throughout human history, Pinecones have served as a symbolic representation of Human Enlightenment, the Third Eye and the Pineal Gland. The Pineal Gland, shaped like (and named after) the Pinecone, is at the geometric centre of the human brain and is intimately linked to our body's perception of light. It is considered by many ancient cultures to be our biological Third Eye, the "Seat of the Soul," the “Epicenter of Enlightenment.”

I painted this live at a gathering of creatives of all flavours in Vancouver. The idea came as I was listening to a poet speak on the state of the environment, and it got me thinking about a news story I had just read about eco-tourism and the efforts of an organization in Africa that uses tourist dollars to protect giraffes and their habitats. The finished painting was sold by auction to a lovely man from Toronto, as a gift to his beautiful little daughter for her room.

Early morning in the mountains, the sun just beginning to stream over the peaks, filling the shadows with warmth and light. This is perhaps one of the most fulfilling experiences I enjoy while camping. Ahhh, a new day, full of possibility…

Like a wise grandfather, the gentle moon casts soft light on the lush forest floor, illuminating slow growth and quiet decay. Shed antlers, unfurling ferns, emergent mushroom bodies and flourishing moss illustrate a life cycle that is humble, serene and still. Crisp, clean air invigorates the senses following the rains that nourish these forests and fuel this delicate ecosystem. Tread lightly.

On New Year's Eve, December 31st, 2017, this piece began as a live painting installation at an amazing gathering called "Nectar" in Vancouver. The vibrant community, playful and respectful atmosphere, and the incredible music, art and cacao treats enchanted us all night long.
This piece is inspired by childlike play, that innocent enjoyment of life, which gathering and celebrating in community can bring to our busy adult lives. Thank goodness for those colourful spaces, where expression flows freely and joyfully, in many forms!

I painted this piece on wood in many, mostly translucent layers to give it a lot of depth and so that light would play off it as it plays off of mist over a waterfall. I chose wood as a substrate because it is in alignment with the nature and feel of the piece. I love circles and built the image using circles because of their profound symbolism: the circle represents wholeness, original perfection, the Self, the infinite, the sacred, eternity, timelessness and God (ie. 'God is a circle whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere' - Hermes Trismegistus). In Chinese macrocosmic symbology, it expresses the shape of heaven and perfection as well as eternity. These themes are resonant with the overall theme of the piece. Overall, I painted this waterfall landscape to reflect the peace and serenity of that perfect place that mother earth holds for us all somewhere. Somewhere we feel safe, warm and held, as though we are back in the womb. A timeless, meditative space. No stress, no deadlines, no phones, no distractions...the ego is quiet and the mind still. The body, fully relaxed and at ease, bathes in the gentle sounds of flowing water, the soothing scent of mist and pure green earth and the sensation of pure comfort and truth. My aim with this piece is that viewers feel a sense of deep tranquility when viewing the painting, which is inspired by the incredible waterfalls on Kauai and in very special corners of British Columbia.

The Napali Coast, on the North Shore of Kauai. Near vertical green cliffs plummet thousands of feet into crystal clear blue waters below. White sand beaches, cascading waterfalls, resplendent fruit trees, sea caves and ancient Hawaiian sacred sites reward hikers intrepid enough to brave the narrow 11-mile trail along precipitous ledges to the obscenely picturesque Kalalau valley...one of my favourite places on the planet.

Envision yourself atop a cliff composed of all your worries. You stand at the edge, wondering what it would be like to see yourself free of those worldly concerns. What would happen if you were to take that leap of faith, launching yourself off this precipice into the freedom of just being? What if you took the plunge into the great unknown that is your highest potential? Do you trust yourself? Of course you do, and so you have no fear...you think, ‘what have I got to lose?’ You take the plunge, unaware of what lies below, with no fear of the consequences! You fall freely, the wind in your ears, weightless with a feeling of inner peace that permeates your being. Light as a feather, you land gently and gracefully in a calm, beautiful pool of crystal-clear blue water. A glorious feeling! You look up as you drift bellow the surface: sunlight filters through the tree branches above and bubbles swirl all around you, caressing your skin as you as a deep knowing surfaces inside you: this is freedom! Your heart rate begins to slow and temendous relief washes over you as let go of everything in your life that doesn't serve you: attachments, unresolved tensions, negative emotions...gone. Finally. Pure elation.

This piece is inspired by the tremendous beauty of Whistler's deep, silent valleys, where pristine waters run year-round beneath pillows of untouched powder. I painted it from a photo I took while cross-country skiing in the Callaghan Valley, just south of Whistler.
